Official network growth timeline

How the operating network grew from 38,000 to 50,000 km

This module uses only China’s official year-end operating length for 2020–2025; it does not invent a multi-country history. Play through the series to see network size, annual additions, net additions since 2020 and cumulative growth.

Net addition since 202012,000km
Growth since 202031.6%cumulative

Source bulletins commonly round to units of 10,000 km. Annual additions here are differences between published year-end totals, not kilometre-precise measures of new line openings.

China's share of world high-speed rail in operation

The UIC High-Speed Atlas 2025 extract reflects the network at 31 December 2024 and uses only the In operation column, excluding construction and plans.

UIC reports 47,803 km for China, while the Ministry of Transport reports 48,000 km for year-end 2024, a difference of 197 km. The Ministry's newer 2025 figure is 50,000 km, but it is not divided by the 2024 UIC world total.

The source table has two small internal inconsistencies: country rows sum to 67,724 km, one kilometre above the printed world total, and region labels sum to 43 rows while the footer says TOTAL(44). The published share uses UIC’s printed 67,723 km denominator and discloses both differences.

Same-edition ranking

Spain, Japan, France and Germany follow China

The archived UIC table reports 47,803 km in operation for China and a printed world total of 67,723 km at 31 December 2024, giving China a 70.6% share. Spain, Japan, France and Germany are the next four systems in the same table.

Definition

What operating length measures

This page uses year-end high-speed rail operating length from Ministry of Transport statistical bulletins—route length already open for service. It is operating route length, not the summed length of both tracks, and not construction or planned mileage. Bulletins often round to 10,000 km units, so the page keeps the registered value with its reference year.

Why totals differ

Dates, rounding and classification all move the total

Different release dates, whether construction is included, route versus track length, and classification differences between UIC atlases and Chinese bulletins all change the China total. This page locks the country ranking to one archived UIC table and reference date, while the newer 2025 Chinese official total remains separate.

Common mistake

Do not add operating, under-construction and planned length

Coverage sometimes blends construction pipelines or plans with lines already open. This page treats opened operating length as the formal series, and the same-edition ranking uses only UIC’s In operation column—not construction or planning pipelines.

Reading guide

Three questions before quoting the rail figure

It is easy to treat operating length as a symbol of modernisation; statistically it is first a dated series with a definition.

Which year-end snapshot is this?

Operating length is published as a year-end stock. When comparing across years, make sure both sides are year-end operating length—not a running total of mid-year opening announcements.

Is the comparator on the same definition?

For Spain, Japan or France, use one UIC edition and reference date. Chinese official bulletins remain the source for the domestic annual series and a separate cross-check.

Are you asking about scale or intensity?

Operating length answers network scale. Questions about per-person intensity, land area or passenger volumes need other indicators.
