Scope

What the province total covers

Shandong is the largest provincial economy in northern China. Totals span inland industrial belts and coastal cities such as Qingdao and Yantai; they are not a single metro GDP.

Boundary

Province is not a metro area

Resident population is year-end province-wide. It mixes dense coastal/core cities with less urban inland counties. Administrative area (157,900 sq km) is land inside the provincial boundary, not built-up area.

Economy

How to read the structure

In 2024, Shandong’s GDP reached 9.86 trillion yuan. Industry remains a major growth engine alongside services. 2024 industry structure: primary 6.7%, secondary 40.2%, tertiary 53.1%. Real GDP growth was 5.7%.

International scale check

Compared with Indonesia

Selected for similar economic scale: Indonesia.

Not a like-for-like rank

Indonesia’s nominal GDP (~US$1.40T, UN 2024) is close to Shandong’s province GDP after USD conversion (~US$1.41T).

Shandong is one Chinese province; Indonesia is an archipelagic sovereign state. Area and population scales differ sharply.
