International comparison boundary
Why there is no global expressway ranking here
UNECE/Eurostat motorway, US FHWA Interstate / Other Freeways and Expressways, and national motorway/expressway statistics do not share one administrative or engineering definition. Combining them into a single global ranking would create false comparability.
World Bank research
The legacy total-road indicator is not currently available via the API
On 10 August 2026, the World Bank API returned zero observations for IS.ROD.TOTL.KM for China, the United States, India, Japan, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Russia, Canada and Australia. This page therefore does not turn the legacy indicator page into a current global ranking.
Classification revisions
Annual changes are not pure construction additions
National network plans, road-classification changes and administrative reclassification can affect year-end totals. The history is useful for network expansion, but a year-to-year difference should not be presented as kilometre-precise new construction.

Four questions before quoting road mileage
Road-network numbers look simple, but year, stock-versus-flow treatment, toll status and national definitions can change the answer.
Year-end stock or annual additions?
Every formal value on this page is a year-end network stock. Do not treat adjacent-year differences as an official measure of new or reconstructed road length.
Expressways or toll expressways?
Nationwide expressway mileage and toll-expressway mileage are separate statistics. This page uses the nationwide expressway total.
Are international definitions genuinely aligned?
Motorway, freeway, Interstate and expressway are not automatically equivalent. Without one source and harmonised definition, this page does not publish a global ranking.
Can each annual source be checked?
Every 2010–2025 year has its own source_id, archived HTML and SHA-256, and the table links each year to its corresponding source.
