Scope

What the province total covers

Henan is China's third-most populous province and a major agricultural, manufacturing and logistics hub on the Central Plains. Province-wide figures cover the whole territory, including Zhengzhou and many large prefectures—do not treat the total as a single metro area.

Boundary

Province is not a metro area

Resident population is year-end province-wide. At about 97.85 million it remains one of the largest provincial populations in China, but it has been declining slightly as out-migration continues. Administrative area (167,000 sq km) is land inside the provincial boundary, not built-up area.

Economy

How to read the structure

In 2024, Henan's GDP reached 6.36 trillion yuan. Services accounted for 53.1 percent; agriculture still takes a larger share than in coastal provinces, reflecting the Central Plains economy. 2024 industry structure: primary 8.6%, secondary 38.3%, tertiary 53.1%. Real GDP growth was 5.1%.

International scale check

Compared with Saudi Arabia

Selected for similar economic scale: Saudi Arabia.

Not a like-for-like rank

Saudi Arabia's nominal GDP (~US$1.10T, IMF 2024) is of the same broad order as Henan's province GDP after USD conversion (~US$0.91T).

Henan is a populous inland Chinese province; Saudi Arabia is a resource-based sovereign state. Population and structure differ sharply; GDP similarity is a scale check only.
