Clear numbers. Visible sources. Better context.

China in Figures helps international readers understand modern China through official statistics, transparent definitions, interactive visualisations and careful comparisons.

Cities

Six starting points across 45 cities

Start with cities of different scales and regions. The full directory keeps every city and its administrative boundary visible.

Provincial regions

Six starting points across 34 provincial regions

Province-level totals include counties beyond their core cities and should not be read as metro-area figures. The full directory covers every region.

How to use this site

Read the definition before the magnitude

The homepage gives first-time readers four quick checks; the Methodology page is the authority for definitions, comparison rules and revisions.

1. Check the boundary

A city name is not a built-up area. Municipalities can include suburbs and rural land; ports and airports may use operational scopes.

2. Separate price bases

Levels are often current-price; growth is often constant-price. Do not back out real growth from nominal levels.

3. Compare like with like

Cross-country ranks prefer one dataset edition and one definition; mixed sources are labelled as limited.

4. Send corrections

Broken links, unclear definitions or suspected typos: use Contact and include an official source when possible.
