Ports and container throughput

Cargo tonnage and container throughput describe different dimensions of port activity. This page keeps tonnes and TEU on separate charts.

Container throughput

354

million TEU

Foreign-trade cargo

5.653

billion tonnes

Tonnes and TEU are not interchangeable

Cargo throughput measures mass handled. Container throughput measures standardised box units, regardless of the cargo weight inside each container.

Throughput is not freight carried

Port handling can count cargo as it crosses the port interface. It is not the same series as waterborne freight volume or tonne-kilometres transported.

National totals are not port rankings

The national total aggregates ports across China. Comparing Shanghai, Ningbo-Zhoushan, Shenzhen or other individual ports requires a separate same-scope dataset.
