Scope

What the province total covers

Guangdong is China’s largest provincial economy by GDP. Province-wide figures cover the Pearl River Delta together with eastern, western and northern Guangdong—do not treat the total as “Guangzhou–Shenzhen only.” Related city profiles on this site: Guangzhou, Shenzhen.

Boundary

Province is not a metro area

Resident population is year-end province-wide. It mixes dense coastal/core cities with less urban inland counties. Administrative area (179,800 sq km) is land inside the provincial boundary, not built-up area.

Economy

How to read the structure

In 2024, Guangdong’s GDP reached 14.16 trillion yuan. Services accounted for 57.5 percent; the Pearl River Delta alone contributed most of the provincial total. 2024 industry structure: primary 4.1%, secondary 38.4%, tertiary 57.5%. Real GDP growth was 3.5%.

International scale check

Selected for similar economic scale: Canada.

Not a like-for-like rank

Canada’s nominal GDP (~US$2.27T, UN 2024) is close to Guangdong’s province GDP after USD conversion (~US$2.03T).

Guangdong is a Chinese province; Canada is a sovereign country. Population and area are national figures and are not administratively comparable.
