Definition

What value added measures

Manufacturing value added measures newly created value after intermediate inputs—the core flow for industry’s contribution. It is not gross industrial output, firm revenue or export value. China’s official yuan series and the World Bank current-dollar comparison answer related but different questions.

Why values differ

Currency, revisions and update timing

World Bank current-dollar values and China’s official yuan figures diverge because of exchange rates, revision timing, price concepts and database update cycles. The page keeps the yuan official value and the dollar comparison separate instead of inventing one “true” number.

Common mistake

Do not mix incompatible rulers

Do not compare manufacturing value added directly with gross industrial output, goods exports or above-scale industrial growth rates. For country scale, prefer one international dataset edition; for China’s domestic structure, prefer NBS definitions with the year shown.

Reading guide

Check these before citing manufacturing figures

Yuan or US dollars?

Domestic level and structure discussions usually use official yuan values; cross-country charts often use current dollars, where exchange rates move relative ranks.

Value added or gross output?

Value added nets out intermediate inputs. Treating gross output or exports as “manufacturing size” can badly distort comparisons.

Which price basis is the growth on?

Real growth and current-price levels are not interchangeable. Keep growth notes attached to their source concept.

Is there a common year?

International bars should only compare economies that share a year; missing values stay missing.
