What it measures

Goods trade statistics record cross-border merchandise exports and imports. They usually exclude most services trade. China’s latest headline total comes from Customs annual statistics; exports, imports and the balance should share the same release concept and year.

Why numbers differ

Customs statistics, balance-of-payments goods and national accounts use different concepts. Growth rates in yuan versus US dollars also move with exchange rates. International charts should lock one database indicator and a common year.

Common mistake

Do not treat a merchandise trade surplus as a current-account surplus, and do not treat export value as domestic value added or a complete measure of manufacturing strength.

Reading guide

Align concepts before citing trade figures

Same release for total, exports and imports?

The three figures should share one Customs year and valuation concept; otherwise the balance will not reconcile.

Goods or services?

This page is merchandise trade. Services balances are a different system and should not be casually added into “all trade”.

Dollar paths move with exchange rates

Long-run export series in US dollars help comparison, but exchange rates and prices reshape the curve.

Common year on international bars

Cross-country bars only use a shared year; missing economies stay unavailable.
