Industrial robots in China

Read annual installations, operational stock, global installation share and domestic supplier share separately. They use different units and denominators and cannot be added or averaged into one “robot competitiveness index”. The public 2025 China release does not give an exact operational-stock figure, so that metric remains current through 2024.

Installations and stock

Installations through 2025; operational stock through 2024

Installations are the annual deployment flow; operational stock is the cumulative number still operating at year end. IFR’s public 2025 China release does not publish an exact operational-stock figure, so the stock chart does not invent a 2025 bar.

Two different shares

China took 59% of global installations; domestic suppliers held 55% in China

The 59% figure asks how many of the world’s new installations were deployed in China. The 55% figure asks how many installations in China were supplied by Chinese manufacturers. The denominators differ.

Customer industries in 2025

Electrical/electronics, automotive and metal/machinery remained the leading industries

The three industries installed 254,000 units, about 71.8% of China’s 2025 total. Electrical/electronics rose 16%, automotive 38%, and metal/machinery 44%.

Flow versus stock

Do not add 354,000 to 2.027 million

The 354,000 figure is the 2025 installation flow. The 2.027 million figure is the 2024 year-end operational stock. They differ in both reference year and statistical concept.

Different denominators

The 59% is not a localisation rate

The 59% is China’s share of global annual installations. The 55% is the share of China-market installations supplied by domestic manufacturers.

Industrial robots only

Service robots are excluded

IFR industrial robots follow the ISO definition and are mainly used in factory automation. Logistics, medical, household and other service robots are outside this indicator.
