China coal, oil and natural gas consumption

One archived US EIA International Energy Statistics release tracks China’s coal, oil and natural gas consumption from 1980 to 2024, each fuel’s world share and China’s fossil mix. This is consumption—not production, exports, reserves or capacity.

China and the world · same-source formal data

Three fossil fuels and their world shares

China and World both use the per-fuel consumption series of one archived EIA bulk file; every share is China ÷ World × 100. The three fuels use different units and are always shown separately.

In 2024 China consumed 2,653 Mtoe of coal — 58.6% of the world total — while its oil share was 15.9% and its gas share 10.0%. In 2000 the three shares were 30.3%, 6.1% and 1.0%.

China’s coal, oil and gas consumption mix

All three fuels converted to Mtoe and stacked. This covers fossil fuels only—nuclear, hydro, wind and solar are excluded.

Scope and common misreadings

Consumption

The formal measure on this page: EIA annual per-fuel consumption—coal in Mtoe, oil in thousand barrels per day, gas in bcm.

Not production or reserves

China’s coal consumption share of the world differs from its production share; consumption, production, trade and reserves must stay separate.

Source boundaries

EIA is an internationally comparable estimate; NBS energy balances and the EI Statistical Review differ in scope. This page never mixes them.

Unit boundaries: the three fuels use different units and must not be added; only the China fossil-mix chart converts them to a common Mtoe unit, and it covers fossil fuels only. Shares are always computed within one fuel (China ÷ World × 100).
