China wind, solar and hydro electricity generation
One archived Ember Yearly Electricity Data release tracks China’s actual wind, solar and hydro generation from 2000 to 2025, each technology’s world share and China’s renewable mix. This is actual generation (TWh)—not installed capacity (GW).

Wind, solar and hydro generation and world shares
China and World both use the per-technology generation series of one archived Ember file; every share is China ÷ World × 100. The headline share sums the three technologies, and per-technology shares are shown below.
In 2025 China’s wind, solar and hydro generation summed to 3,705 TWh against a world total of 9,923 TWh — 37.3%, up from 8.4% in 2000. By technology, China generated 41.9% of the world’s wind, 42.3% of its solar and 31.5% of its hydro electricity.

The three technologies stacked in TWh. Bioenergy, geothermal, other renewables and nuclear are excluded.
| Technology | Generation (TWh) | Share of the three |
|---|---|---|
| Wind | 1,135.4 | 30.6% |
| Solar | 1,174.9 | 31.7% |
| Hydro | 1,394.8 | 37.6% |
| Three-technology total | 3,705.2 | 100% |

Scope and common misreadings
Generation
The formal measure on this page: Ember actual per-technology generation in terawatt-hours (TWh).
Not installed capacity
Generation (TWh) and capacity (GW) are different measures; China’s generation share differs from its capacity share. This page covers generation only.
Source boundaries
Ember is an internationally comparable estimate; NBS/NEA official figures differ in scope. The combined series covers only wind, solar and hydro—no bioenergy, geothermal or nuclear.
Shares are always computed within one technology (China ÷ World × 100); the headline share sums the three technologies inside the same archive. Read alongside the coal, oil and gas consumption page to see China’s fossil and clean-electric positions together.
