Fresh fruit rose faster while vegetables were steadier
Both lines use the same NBS household-survey framework and the same kg/person/year unit. The fruit series always uses the same-named “fresh fruit and melons” item rather than splicing in the broader discontinued aggregate.

In 2024, vegetables and edible fungi were 108.5 kg/person/year in urban households and 108.9 in rural households; fresh fruit and melons were 67.5 versus 53.5.

Provincial differences in household food consumption
In 2024, Chongqing recorded the highest vegetables-and-edible-fungi value at 136.8 kg/person/year, while Shandong led fresh fruit and melons at 84.6. Provincial differences should not be read directly as differences in nutritional quality.

International comparison uses food availability, not household consumption
In FAOSTAT’s 2023 Food Balances, China’s vegetable food supply was 406.68 kg/person/year versus 148.00 for the world; fruits excluding wine were 113.82 versus 86.49. These are food-balance availability measures and should not be spliced into or directly subtracted from the NBS household-consumption series above.

Not dietary intake
Ingredient weights from meals eaten away from home are outside this quantity measure
The household survey can record spending on meals eaten away from home, but not the kilograms of vegetables or fruit inside those meals. The series is therefore suited to household food-consumption structure, not nutritional adequacy.

Fresh-fruit series
The series always uses the same “fresh fruit and melons” item
From 2022 the yearbook stopped publishing the broader aggregate, but the fresh-fruit-and-melons sub-item already existed before then. The formal series uses that same item throughout.
Sources and verification
NBS household consumption and FAOSTAT food availability are governed separately
The domestic section archives the 2025 national, urban, rural and 2024 provincial yearbook tables and cross-checks overlapping years against the 2019 edition. The international section records the SHA-256 of the complete FAOSTAT Food Balances 2025-10-28 bulk file and preserves the 196-row 2010–2023 subset for seven comparison areas, two food groups and their FAO flags.

Added a separate 2010–2023 FAOSTAT Food Balances comparison for China, World, United States, India, Germany, South Korea and Brazil. The international series measure food availability/apparent supply and are explicitly not merged with NBS household consumption.
