Total retail sales

Not household consumption expenditure

Total retail sales of consumer goods is a domestic-trade measure, not household final consumption expenditure in the national accounts and not all service consumption.

Online retail vs e-commerce

Retail subsets and broad platform transactions stay separate

Online retail includes goods and services; physical-goods online retail is a subset. Broad e-commerce transaction value also includes transactions to organisations and cannot replace or be added to online retail.

International comparison

UNCTAD enterprise sales are not consumer shopping

The UNCTAD series includes B2B, B2C and B2G sales through web and EDI-type channels. Activity coverage, enterprise size, valuation and reporting periods vary, and current-dollar ranks also reflect exchange rates.

Revision, terminology and year boundaries

  • The 2017 communique uses the older “online merchandise retail sales” label; later editions use “online retail sales of physical goods.” The terminology transition is preserved.
  • The 2024 communique says total retail sales were revised using Fifth National Economic Census results. Annual communique values are publication-vintage snapshots, not a fully back-revised database series.
  • Broad e-commerce transaction value is available in the current archived extraction only for 2022–2025; earlier years are not backfilled.
  • UNCTAD’s e-commerce share-of-turnover measure has no China observations and is therefore not used for the China-inclusive animation.
