International tourism

This page uses World Bank WDI tourism series sourced from UN Tourism. The core unit is arrivals or departures, not unique people; repeat trips by the same traveler are counted repeatedly. Collection methods also differ across economies.

Read these boundaries first

“162 million arrivals” does not mean 162 million unique people

WDI explicitly states that arrivals and departures count trips. Inbound data may come from border statistics, accommodation establishments, air arrivals or broader visitor concepts. Global rankings are therefore same-database scale comparisons, not proof of perfectly identical national definitions.

Five boundaries

Arrivals ≠ unique travelers

Departures ≠ unique outbound travelers

Arrivals − departures ≠ a tourism balance

2019 is the normal comparison baseline

The observed 2020 COVID break is kept unsmoothed

01

What this indicator measures

Inbound arrivals and resident departures answer two different travel-flow questions

ST.INT.ARVL measures international arrivals received by a destination; ST.INT.DPRT measures departures residents make abroad. They can be read side by side for China, but subtracting them does not create net migration, tourism receipts or a meaningful “net tourists” measure.

02

China’s long-run shift

Inbound and outbound travel were both high in 2019, then collapsed together in 2020

China recorded 162.538 million international arrivals and 154.632 million outbound departures in 2019. In 2020 they fell to 30.402 million and 20.334 million respectively. The break is observed data and is not interpolated or smoothed.

World share

China accounted for about 6.76% of world international arrivals in 2019

The WLD arrivals total in this archived snapshot ends in 2019, so the formal world-share series also stops in 2019. China has a 2020 arrival observation, but it is not paired with a 2019 world denominator to manufacture a 2020 share.

International comparison

France, the United States and China lead the fixed 15-economy set in 2019

The fixed comparison uses 2019 rather than 2020 because it better represents normal cross-border travel and avoids pandemic-control timing dominating the ranking. Even then, national arrival definitions and collection methods require caution.

Animated global ranking

Every 1995–2020 frame has observations for at least 100 real economies

Each frame uses observed positive values only, excludes World Bank aggregates and keeps the top 15 by arrivals. The default is 2019, while the slider can move to 2020 to show the pandemic shock; the 2020 ordering is not a normal-tourism competitiveness ranking.

What this dataset cannot tell you

It is not a 2026 recovery dashboard, a visitor-quality metric or a tourism-receipts ranking

The archived WDI arrivals and departures series both stop in 2020, so the page describes historical structure and the pandemic break rather than claiming to show the current recovery. Tourism receipts were archived as well, but China’s series stops in 2004 in this snapshot, so it is deliberately excluded from the modern page.
