Current account balance

The current account is the net balance of current transactions in goods and services, primary income and secondary income between residents and non-residents. Positive values are surpluses and negative values are deficits. It is broader than the goods trade balance and is not foreign-exchange reserves, the financial account or a stock of external assets.

Separate the concepts first

Surplus and deficit are net balances, not “good” and “bad” scores

Current-account balances reflect saving and investment, trade, services, investment income, transfers, business cycles and prices. Different development stages and economic structures can support different balance positions. This page compares direction, scale and GDP-relative size without turning surplus ranks into welfare, competitiveness or policy-quality scores.

Six boundaries

Current account ≠ goods trade balance

Net flow ≠ FX-reserve stock

Positive = surplus; negative = deficit

Current US$ ≠ constant-price real quantity

Larger surplus ≠ automatically better

No “China share of world balance” is published

01

What the current account includes

Goods, services, primary income and secondary income combine into the final balance

WDI BN.CAB.XOKA.CD is sourced from IMF balance-of-payments statistics. A goods-trade surplus can be partly offset by a services deficit or net primary-income outflow, and vice versa. Customs goods-trade balances therefore cannot substitute for the full current account.

02

China’s long-run shift

The dollar surplus reached a series high in 2025, while the GDP ratio remained far below its 2007 peak

China’s series begins in 1982. The 2025 balance was about +US$735.0 billion, the largest dollar surplus in the series, but at 3.77% of GDP it remained below the 9.80% peak in 2007. Absolute scale and economy-relative size must be read separately.

03

Dollar scale versus relative size

The same dollar surplus can mean very different external-balance intensity at different economy sizes

The GDP ratio is better for comparing how large the balance is relative to the economy, across countries and over time. But it is not a target score either: small open economies can run double-digit surpluses while very large economies can pair huge dollar balances with moderate GDP ratios.

Above zero is surplus and below zero is deficit; the series-high positive ratio in 2007 is marked.

04

Long-run major-economy comparison

Large economies can persist on very different sides of the zero line

The United States has long run current-account deficits, while China, Germany, Japan, Korea and Singapore have often run surpluses in recent years; the United Kingdom and India are frequently on the deficit side. These are balance-of-payments net balances, not a trade scoreboard of winners and losers.

Animated surplus ranking

Only positive-surplus economies are ranked, avoiding a fake “higher is better” ordering across signed balances

Every 1990–2024 frame requires at least 120 real economies with amount observations, then selects the top 15 positive balances. Only 97 real economies have 2025 amount data, so the global animation stops in 2024 even though China and the fixed 15-economy set have 2025 values.

Fixed 2025 comparison

China has the largest surplus and the United States the largest deficit in the fixed set; this is not a complete 2025 global ranking

All 15 selected economies have 2025 observations for both dollar balance and GDP share, allowing a same-year comparison. But only 97 real economies have 2025 amount data globally, so this is explicitly a fixed 15-economy comparison rather than a 2025 global ranking.

Broader than trade

Services and income also matter

A goods surplus does not directly equal the current-account surplus.

Net flow

Not reserves or an asset stock

The current account records net transactions during a period, not the year-end FX reserve stock.

GDP ratio

Scale normalization, not a target score

It helps compare balances relative to economy size, but there is no universal “higher is better” optimum.

No global share

Signed net balances are not a share denominator

This page never constructs a “China world share” from CHN/WLD or summed country balances.
