One archived WDI release (mirroring FAO FishStat) tracks China’s total aquatic output, its aquaculture/capture split and each role’s world share from 1960 to 2024. This is production—not food supply, consumption or trade.

China and World both use the per-role production series of one archived WDI file (total/aquaculture/capture); every share is China ÷ World × 100. Total production includes aquatic animals and algae.

In 2024 China produced 95.2 million tonnes of aquatic products against a world total of 235.8 million tonnes — 40.4%, up from roughly 7.9% in 1965. By role, China farmed 58.0% of the world’s aquaculture output but caught only 14.0% of the world’s wild catch — China’s position is driven by farming.

Scope and common misreadings
Production
The formal measure on this page: WDI annual production by role (total/aquaculture/capture), stored in tonnes, displayed in million tonnes.
Not consumption
Production is not food supply, consumption or intake; trade, stocks and processing all break that link.
Source boundaries
WDI mirrors FAO FishStat bit-for-bit; total production includes algae. China fishery-yearbook scopes differ and are never mixed here.
Shares are always computed within one role (China ÷ World × 100). Aquaculture and capture decompose production by origin; the tiny gap between their sum and the total is an FAO balancing item, shown transparently in the table.
