China primary aluminium production

China produced 45.016 million tonnes of primary aluminium in 2025, up 2.4%. International comparisons use the latest BGS 2020–2024 yearbook and are not spliced into the NBS series.

Derived international context

China’s share of the BGS published country-row sum

The denominator is the derived sum of BGS published country rows for each year, not an independently published BGS world total, so it is not registered as a formal global share.

The fixed ten are the 2024 top ten within 41 economies with complete five-year coverage, not an unrestricted global top ten. Japan lacks a 2024 row and is outside the complete set.

Data rule:Only real BGS country-year rows are used. Explicit Nil production is retained as zero; absent rows are never zero-filled, interpolated or carried forward.

Primary aluminium

New metal produced by electrolytic reduction of alumina

NBS uses “primary aluminium (electrolytic aluminium)” and BGS uses “aluminium, primary”. The page compares only this product concept.

Excluded

Not alumina, recycled aluminium, fabricated products or capacity

Alumina is an upstream input, recycled aluminium comes from secondary sources, fabricated products are downstream outputs, and smelting capacity is a stock of capability rather than actual production.

International comparability

Estimates, fiscal years and Nil rows remain visible

Some BGS country rows are estimates or use non-calendar periods. Explicit Nil means a published zero, while an absent row remains missing; the two are not interchangeable.

Ranks apply only to the 41 economies with a BGS row in every year from 2020 through 2024; Japan is excluded because its 2024 row is absent.

Source-vintage and interpretation boundaries

  • NBS and BGS both report China for 2020–2024, but they are separate source vintages and differ slightly in some years; the page never splices them.
  • The full BGS historical API contains duplicate country-year rows from different yearbook editions. This indicator uses only table 3 of the latest World Mineral Production 2020–2024 edition, avoiding silent deduplication.
  • The BGS country-row sum is used only as derived context and is not registered as an official world total or global share.
