Scope
Liaoning is the industrial heartland of northeast China and a Bohai coastal province, centred on Shenyang and Dalian. Province-wide figures cover the whole territory—do not treat the total as a single port-city economy.
Boundary
Resident population is year-end province-wide. At about 41.55 million it has one of the highest urbanisation rates of any Chinese province, reflecting its dense city system. Administrative area (145,900 sq km) is land inside the provincial boundary, not built-up area.
Economy
In 2024, Liaoning's GDP reached 3.26 trillion yuan. Services accounted for 56.9 percent; equipment manufacturing and high-tech industry led secondary growth. 2024 industry structure: primary 7.9%, secondary 35.3%, tertiary 56.9%. Real GDP growth was 5.1%.
International scale check
Selected for similar economic scale: Malaysia.
Not a like-for-like rank
Malaysia's nominal GDP (~US$0.45T, IMF 2024) is close to Liaoning's province GDP after USD conversion (~US$0.47T).
Liaoning is a Chinese province; Malaysia is a sovereign state. Area is comparable but administrative status differs.
